For all the tyranny and insistence of his own way, he wasn't a bad-looking man, if a bit mad. He invented ballet and was an excellent dancer. On the flip side, if a courtier couldn't dance up to his specifications, they weren't welcome at court. I'd hate to be a middle-aged portly ambassador faced with learning ballet. I think his highest accomplishment was to build Versailles in a swamp. To those who haven't seen Versailles, it's an example of decadence, over-the-top architecture with astonishing grounds and gorgeous gardens. There is a glass orangerie where oranges were grown around the calendar. Some of the later additions like Trianon fueled the revolution because of their extravagance while the population of France was starving. I think, as I walk through the gardens and halls of Versaille, that it might even be on another planet as it has no resemblance to anything ordinary. That has its upside and its downside. It's one of the world's greatest feats of building and design, but the cost was staggering. The money could have been much better used. One could say the same of Notre Dame de Paris and La Sainte Chapelle on Isle de la Cite (sry no accent grave available) but they too are works of art and cost the lives of many and the income of the entire country many times over to be built. One can argue either way. Art for art's sake is a respite from daily cares, but the cost is very high.

She had the small eyes and colouring of her father, but the slenderness of her mother. Henry was a good looking man until he became obese and immobile but Elizabeth remained whippet thin throughout her life. A bit like Princess Anne. No beauty, but nevertheless an attractive and engaging woman.

I've always thought that Anne of Cleves was a lovely lady. When I was told she was the "ugly wife" then saw her portrait, I mistook her for Catherine Howard, supposedly the most beautiful wife. I think she was, especially for our modern esthetics, beautiful, bright, canny, loving and wise. She had a good life and knew how to avoid "stepping in Royal mud puddles". I say Bravo!
